Dance no more

When you thought useless legislation like banning dance bars in Maharashtra was the last straw, there comes another one on its tail. This time, it is Taliban Bangalore:

At restaurants and lounge bars—with or without dance floors—owners these days get into a nervous tizzy even if clients tap their feet or nod too vigorously to the music. Over 150 plain clothed policemen are on the prowl to book anybody, dancer or owner, for dancing without a license.

“You can be arrested for dancing. You also cannot play music that provokes dancing. We have had to put sofas and fill spaces to prevent customers from dancing,” says Amardipta Biswas, owner of Taika and Cosmo Village, two of the city’s in-vogue lounge bars and restaurants.

The new law is for the good of the people. Why should people stay out late and spoil their own health. We have spoken to a lot of people and learnt that the law has not affected them,’’ says Deputy Commissioner of Police (admn) B Shivakumar.

It wasn’t enough for my mother to impose a curfew on partying out late now the Deputy Commissioner is out there taking care of my “personal health” too. But thankfully, I don’t live in Bangalore. But poor Bangaloreans, please accept my sympathies for you can no longer dance in joy or break out into a jig over the next outsourced job. The entire city is tucked into bed, as IE puts it, at 11pm. Of course, and why not, shouldn’t we be ready to slog out our asses the next morning? Partying and dancing is a sin according to the new moral police that seem to be spreading their tentacles all over India.

I thought it was only the Shiv Sena that was caught in a time warp but poor Bangalore city officials seems to have learnt the wrong things from Mumbai. Maybe if they had to imitate Mumbai, they would do better if they upgraded their airport instead.

The government is worried about public health? Maybe every police officer should also be given training in being a nurse and they should divide their time in between upholding the law and attending to sick people in slums. Hows that for an idea?

Can we have a conversation…I hope its not against the law to talk and laugh? Or a law banning these in the making?

  3. Patrix Says:

Gawker, the government seems to be greatly worried about our personal welfare. Let us pile on them, demanding free healthcare and education.

Queer, gulp! let us talk quickly and exchange ideas before they crack down on blogging too.

One step forward, ten steps back - that’s India for you! Yes, we the so-called biggest ‘democracy’. Who the hell are these people to impose these codes? And it is always this Assistant Commissioner of so and so who comes out with the asinine statements…he owes his job to the people, this low bloody lowlife.

Rash, I certainly hope so. Would transferring him help?

Twilight, Thank heavens you aren’t in Bangalore. I would have expected this in Delhi or even Mumbai but certainly not Bangalore.
