I don’t know what is the bigger joke; Rashid Miyan suggesting that the Indians backed out of a possible peace accord because Musharaff had a change of attire or he claiming that Musharaff is not “in the habit of lying”. But considering that the event did occur, can we for a moment contemplate on what exactly happened? Let me hypothesize on an imaginary situation, although given the neighboring country’s penchant for creating mischief, I may not be too far from the truth.
Did the Pakistani Premier change from his civilian attire to his military regalia? That might have changed the Indian minds. We were entertaining a neighboring premier, not making a war monger happy. The change in attire might have signaled a shift in the Indian camp since that show of military pomposity surely wouldn’t be appreciated. The widows of 449 brave jawans were not particularly happy that we were showing the Taj Mahal to the architect of Kargil.
But then again, I may be totally wrong and he did want to look good for the photographs. That’s when Vajpayee’s coterie noticed the fine print. I wish I knew what really happened behind those closed doors.
