Early Holiday Cheer

The local Starbucks was unusually busy last Sunday night. Almost all the staff was present shuffling around and Melissa was busy ordering everyone around while surveying some decorations herself. I wondered if they were having a midnight party. But when I returned Monday evening, I saw why they were so hyper busy. Starbucks officially kicked off their holiday season on November 8 – full three weeks before Thanksgiving. But the red-white decorations were clearly Christmas oriented. They had the red snowflakes adorned paper cups and were playing Jingle Bells on their channel music. Kevin had a silver shimmering halo on his head and Stephanie blushed a shade of red when I complimented her angel wings.

But honestly, don’t you think Starbucks is pushing it a bit too much? Admittedly the holiday season is a fun time to be but we still aren’t even in the Thanksgiving mood (yet) let alone Christmas. The eggnog can wait a while. I don’t assume they have all the decorations out for Diwali either, so why the hurry? Not everyone was pleased to see the early holiday cheer. People were still working and are desperately trying to catch their pre-holiday season deadlines. But for the stores, its all about business and cashing in on the $50 billion gift season; most of which is a deadweight loss.

The best (or worst?) part about holidays is planning for them and then doing nothing. I rather look forward to my holidays and not pre-emptively start celebrating them. How about you?
