Economic Argument for Donation Drives

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or email alerts. Thanks for visiting!

Initially I was unsure of the response to DesiPundit’s donation drive and was wary that our request for donations would be perceived wrongly. I even went to the extent of pre-emptively labeling as our drive as ‘blegging’ before anyone could do so. But I was pleasantly surprised to see the outpouring of goodwill from our readers who seemed to appreciate the work we put in. We had only a solitary doubter and I wrote back citing our motives (he remains unconvinced but who cares, right?) Now the excellent economics blog, Marginal Revolutions is running its ‘Pledge Drive’ and places such donation drives in suitable economic contexts that I never would have thought of:

“…to decide how much to invest in this venture we markup donations to get an estimate of our social value and we put positive weight on social welfare in our utility function.”

That sounds perfect and almost in line with DesiPundit motives as well. I am glad to have found an example that I can cite to justify for our donation drive next year.
