Gmail Paper & Google TiSP - Google’s April Fool Jokes

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or email alerts. Thanks for visiting!

Gmail PaperYou gotta be wary of any announcement on April Fool’s Day especially from the Web’s top company. Especially when it seems that they are going in the opposite direction.

If you checked your Gmail today then you might have seen the announcement on the login page that Google was introducing ‘Gmail Paper’. It further said that they were bringing back the age of stamps, filing cabinets, and the mailman. A new button in your Gmail account will let you request a physical copy of any message that Google will send to you (free, of course.) The testimonials on this page explaining Gmail Paper ought to tell you enough.

Google going the paper way, eh? Nice try, Google. But then don’t forget that Gmail with its then-WTF 1GB disk space was also announced on April Fool’s Day causing everyone to disbelieve Google. But we definitely know better than to trust Google on this one. After all, they had their share of jokes like Google Gulp and Google Lunar jobs.

In fact, Gmail Paper isn’t their only gag for this April. Google TiSP offers free inhome wireless broadband service [via.] Now only if this were true but sadly, it is not. This of course is different from their other free municipal wireless network that Google has offered in Mountain View.

Introducing Google TiSP (BETA), our new FREE in-home wireless broadband service. Sign up today and we’ll send you your TiSP self-installation kit, which includes setup guide, fiber-optic cable, spindle, wireless router and installation CD.

Too good to be true, eh? Yeah, it is. The following diagram on how TiSP works is hilarious. One warning, don’t try this at home unless you want to crap at broadband speed.

Ever thought what would TiSP expand as? - Toilet Internet Service Provider, perhaps?

Yea, such April Fool’s Day is fun.

  2. Karl Says:

Google offering wireless broadband service isn’t too surprising. I expected Google to make a move in ISP filed for a while, especially dedicated Internet access lines. Their recent acquisitions of dark fiber and Internet hosting start-ups is indication to that. This April fool joke might be just a hint of Google’s more realistic plans for the near future!

  3. Patrix Says:

Pradeep, that’s an appropriate expansion of the acronym :)

Karl, Sure! They might be contemplating offering Internet access but I doubt it will be toilet-powered :)
