Hollywood or Karva Chauth?

Marrying Abhishek Bachchan may have been Aishwarya’s worst decision at least career-wise. She had to turn down a lead role in Will Smith’s new movie for Karva Chauth.

I can never understand why urban, educated women still observe Karva Chauth. It is not really part of any of the scriptures, it’s just “custom”. And flies against all rational thought.

It gets even funnier when people who don’t even wear their mangalsutras regularly (and aren’t those also supposed to do the same thing?) observe a fast for Karva Chauth. Can someone explain the logic to me?

  2. Patrix Says:

Lekhni, I’m sure Aishwarya wasn’t compelled to observe Karva Chauth but her response in deciding between the two sure seemed to implied that she was. I simply can’t imagine why she would choose to do that.

“I simply can’t imagine why she would choose to do that”
    - I wonder how much of the decision arose from nurturing Brand Ash.

Being among the top 100 most influential people in the world doesn’t necessarily mean she gets to do what she wants. I could imagine a star who is more in the bindaas mold (eg. Mallika Sherawat) blowing off a Karva Chauth.

But hasn’t Aishwarya’s appeal, and hence her influence, always been more mainstream? Maybe she sometimes has to follow these customs to maintain that influence.

Of course, all these explanations may be over-complicating the issue: maybe she just did want to do the fast.

Bhel Puri, Actually that was a rhetorical question and you are right. I also believe she is nurturing Brand Ash; she always has. Being a superstar in India is worth more than being a bimbo in Hollywood.

Well, I didn’t see anything wrong with what she chose. Everyone has their reasons and sometimes just coz they are a public persona, doesn’t mean they aren’t their own.

  6. Patrix Says:

Rads, to each his own but personally I find Karva Chauth to be one of the regressive Indian customs. I probably erred in expecting Aishwarya to live up to her self-professed claims of a modern Indian woman.

  7. Lekhni Says:

After watching Ash on 60 minutes a few years back, tittering, smiling plastic smiles and mouthing platitudes, I am very confused about who the real Ash is. I did not get a single glimpse of the real person either then, or in all the press coverage before and after. Certainly, her public persona (and no doubt, all her public actions) do not represent any of her real thoughts or motives. Is this what people are reduced to, when they become famous :(

Don’t underestimate the lure of Hollywood. Even Vijay Amritraj acted as a rickshaw puller just so he could be in an “English movie”. There is something else going on here - did she think Abhishek would be jealous?

  8. Patrix Says:

Lekhni, I have always known Ash to be one smart cookie for having carefully nurtured her public persona but as you mentioned, the more you do it, the more fake you seem. After a while, people wise up and look beyond that facade she has built up over the years and are disappointed or even angry to find nothing there. I don’t think she would drop the idea of Hollywood because Abhishek would be jealous. She is just caught in the persona of her making of being a bharteeya naari.
