Wedding invitations are in the mail

As the D-Day approaches, items on the checklist leading up to the day are getting ticked off. We are far away from the actual battleground where our parents are holding fort. Last I heard was my dad informing me that our house is done with the paint job; inside and outside. It seems our wedding was an excuse for a much-needed upgrade to the look of the house. But then Asian Paints must be happy that we didn’t wait until Diwali for their ‘deewaron ko jab sajaana ho‘ ads to convince us to give our home a makeover. Dad, the astute and conscientious planner that he is, must definitely be having a PERT/CPM project management chart hanging in his office with the important deadlines highlighted. Little items like asking me to stop interfering in his own wedding plans are marked boldly in red. Other items like raiding the jewelers and sari shops to confiscate all available items on sale are duly underway and considering that a second wedding (of my brother) follows a week later, there is no excuse to have any mercy. While all this is happening halfway across the world, we live our lives here almost unmindful of the chaos back home and any updates are on the need to know basis lest I decide to impose my will on any preparatory details.

But not to be left behind, we are engaging in our little wedding preparation exercise too. The tuxedo that I will wear for my reception has already been bought from Men’s Wearhouse. I might be the rare few bridegrooms in a 100-mile radius not attired by India’s favorite, Raymonds. The other item on our two-item list was our set of wedding invitations. Now, my parents have already gone ahead and printed up invitations in India that they would be sending out to people I have hard know. They wanted me to send them an address list of friends I wanted to invite so they would send the same invitation. But we decided to go with our own and I am told that Ash’s family has their own version of the invitation too. So basically for the same wedding, we have three different versions of the invitation. As far as I am concerned, as long as the name of the bride and bridegroom is the same on all three, I could care less.

But having our own invitations for ‘our’ friends and work colleagues allowed us to partake in the wedding preparation activities that most parents live for. Admittedly, Ash did most of the research and I was shown some samples that I pointed to as my preferences. Sadly, we had to drop the invitation that had a Nike Ganpati (don’t ask!) but we were pleased with our final choice. Ash has much more on the wedding invitation process which we did completely online. We tried going to a local American wedding invite printer but it was prohibitively expensive. Fortunately, the web makes shopping even for wedding invitations extremely easy. We got ours printed from All Wedding Cards and were extremely satisfied with the service and results.

We had assumed the invite list would be small but after counting all people we would like to share our joyous moment, it turned out to quite a list. Requests for mailing addresses went out and only after couple of reminders, was the list finally complete. The invitations were mailed out on Monday and are spread over seven countries including India and United States.
