Ink-stained Democracy

InkfingersDid the Republican Congressmen also vote in the Iraqi election? It seems that apna Desi Republican Congressman Bobby Jindal had this brainwave of offering ink for anyone attending the State of the Union address. This was in order to make a symbolic gesture of support  "for Iraqis and “people throughout the world who seek freedom.” The Iraqi woman whom Bush had invited for the State of the Union proudly showed her ink-stained finger (for a moment, I thought she was showing her middle finger). Now that is a symbolic gesture for democracy; not some lame last-minute brainwave [via Sepia Mutiny]. Earlier, the same ink stains were feared to be a bait for insurgents wanting to disrupt the polling process. What a change a simple speech can make?
