There are 29 days in February this year; one more than the usual. I’ll spare you the details on this anomaly but it is quite cool to note how simple adjustments of just adding a day can correct for the temporal drift. I have always been fascinated by the incidence of leap year birthdays i.e. people born on the 29th of February. The chances of anyone being born on that particular day can be so slim yet because there are so many of us that I’m sure there are thousands who are. Incidentally my father-in-law is one of them. He gets to celebrate his birthday only once in four years. Well, that is if you are really particular about dates.
Unfortunately due to some bureaucratic and travel mix up, he is currently on a ship sailing from Bangladesh to Bahrain and will be unable to spend his once-in-four-years birthday with his family or rather, his wife. And since communications aboard the ship are restricted to only emergencies or so we are told, birthday wishes cannot be conveyed via telephone either. Expectedly, my mother-in-law and his friends are disappointed and probably would have to celebrate his birthday days after it has passed. By then, the charm of celebrating the ‘leap birthday’ on a day that will not return next year is lost. Sigh! such is life. Anyway, Dad if you happen to somehow read this blog from aboard the ship, Many Happy Returns of the Day! Probably four years later, the wishes can be delivered in person.
