Riot of Reasons, I read your Smoky Mountains trip too. Too bad I could never make it there although I lived in Atlanta for almost 5 years. Thanks for your compliments. Sunil is having a gala time down in the Carolinas...writing about it rarely matters.

I would love to hear from Kuttan about his Maine trip. Good luck on your Maine trip...September is perfect.

Kuttan made it to Maine too. They also had a great time. Inspired by your trip I think

I have to say that was a great travelogue. Beats Sunil of Balancing life.

I guess I will be headed to Maine this Sept :)

Rick, I am glad you loved my post and the pictures. As far as my winter shutdown statement, of course I didn't mean it as anything offending but simply as a change in lifestyle. There are few regions in the world that have such drastic season changes and you should be pleased to be living in one of those.

Nice bit about midcoast and downeast Maine.

I take a bit of umbrage with your comment that the "state literally shuts down in the winter months as white powder envelopes everything as far as eye can see," as I live here permanently and, much to my chagrin, and forced to work from Columbus Day through Memorial Day (i.e. "The Winter Months").

I jest.

Anyway, I live at the head of one of the peninsulas (or is it peninsulae? I digress ...) and am honored that you enjoyed it to the degree you did.

I have very few photos posted at my site but you've inspired me to go flickr and post a few on my blog as well.

It's ironic but sometimes it takes an outsider's lens to see what is right in front of me every day. Thanks.

Confused, yeah re...don't worry, I got your 'who might get offended' dig. Now that you have already bought an 8 megapixel camera, I won't go into what a waste it was :) but I know who to ask for my poster-size prints now.

Oh yes, I did saw Akshay's pcitures, they were awesome, anyways I was kidding. I hope you got ''who might get offended''.

Megapixels dont count? Serious? I paid so much freaking money for it...:(

Now, I cant find afford to buy a SLR. Let me see if I can do something useful with this one.

Confused, Dude you misunderstand me. I said seemingly uninteresting slums and I subtly refered to Akshay's classic photoessay on Dharavi slums. Who would have ever thought of the potential in there.

Your dad sounds cool. Heck, even my dad was cool enough to trek through the Himalayas although I don't hear many stories from that time...causes me to wonder why. Megapixels don't make for a better camera; it just means that you can blow up your pictures to billboard size. Try getting an SLR and fiddling around with it...even accidental results are cool. Looking forward to your comments on the pictures.

uninteresting slums?

Many people might take offense at that so please keep your trap shut :)

Wows, you guys had a lovely trip, there is so much fun in doing these close-to nature-low on-budget trips...my Dad once backpacked(or rather truck hopped) through Europe and that is a trip which he says hr enjoyed more compared to other more ''comfortable'' trips.

Plus, you already have stories to tell your kids!

I just bought a 8 mega pixel camera on the principle that if the photgrapher is bad, maybe the camera can do the trick!:)

Now let me see the pictures.

I somehow knew that you would put up the picture of "Pier at Bar Harbor" on your blog. You see, I visited your flickr site before this. God, that picture is lovely. Just a tint of color in an otherwise monochromatic picture. Well done.

Star, you should go up there. Best time is September. Beats the crowds yet is nice all around.

Bongo, I dunno why are you keeping your travelogues from us...doesn't hurt to share :) Frommers is a good guide; quite different from other travel guides. We tried exploring other places not mentioned in the guide but were disappointed so we stuck to their recommendations.

Cometes, I can imagine having the pleasure to go up there whenever you want to...something that I don't have. At least you could do it while you were up there.

I used to live in north Massachusetts and Maine was our favorite weekend place to go. We have been to Maine in all the seasons and it is an amazing place...just like you said - it is more of a place to absorb, not just a touristy place..your traveloque is making me miss it so much now.... :(

Driving along coastal Maine is definitely on our to-do list - will take your advice about Frommers. The photos were well worth the pain (I added you as a Contact on Flickr - hope you don't mind).

I agree about the advantages of non-seasonal travel - nothing will spoil your vacation more than a bunch of squealing kids and their overindulgent parents. Not to mention the budgetary considerations.

Hopefully, I will be inspired to write about my own Outer Banks trip now - although it was nothing in terms of experience as your trip.

Your pictures on flickr and the travelogue make the place sound a-mazing! I almost want to get up and follow your route this minute. I especially liked the picture of the 'come sit a while' bench! Frommers Maine Coast eh!
