As Google’s book scanning project continues, they have managed to create some interesting mashups. One of the more interesting ones in recent times is mapping places mentioned in books on a map.
Our team has begun to animate the static information found in books by organizing a sample of locations from them on an interactive Google Map, with snippets of text from the book, and links to the actual pages where the locations are mentioned. When our automatic techniques determine that there are a good number of quality locations from a book to show you, you’ll find a map on the “About this book” page [Book Search Google Blog].
The possibilities are endless. This feature can be priceless in travel books or even works of non-fiction that revolve around a particular city, for e.g. Suketu Mehta’s Maximum City [can't think of a better one right now] or even fictional works like those murder
mysteries
that take you all over the world or even some of the classics
. The lit types can come up with more such examples. After all, it is all about enhancing the experience, right?
