Sakshi, I haven't been there in recent times and I bet it is grossly commercialized now although the ban on vehicles did slow down that process. I remember when our family used to take short vacations there coz it was the closest place to go given my dad's crazy schedule. We always stayed at Rugby, the hotel at the highest point. It had a lazy British summer feel to it. I'm afraid to go back now lest I get a shock.

I remember getting off the train and trekking a few miles, then catching the train back.. on one of those myriad twists that it takes. I loved Matheran the first time (I was a little kid) but when I went back later on, I thought the place too cheesy (touristy). But stillenjoyed the train ride and hikes. Best time to go there is either in August, when the place is green and the rain drizzles on and off or in December.
