I am not talking about the $100 laptop.
What bare minimum essentials should a laptop have and yet be affordable to the common non-geek? Does such a machine exist?

I too am curious about this 100$ laptop. I know many people here who don’t buy computers they believe Rs 25000 for a computer which is not really required in their lives is a lot of money! A Rs 4300 laptop should do the trick.

Patrix,
As for the software, Ubuntu rocks. I started off wanting to salvage an old desktop and turn it into an all-purpose home server. But its so darn clean, neat and spiffy that I plan to install it on my laptop asap

Reality in Dream, Actually 25K is not much for a laptop. I am aiming for that range.
Nitin, I think we have the softwar part covered thanks to plenty of open source products available out there. But I am interested more in the hardware configuration that would be minimalist yet functional for normal usage.

for a non-geek, just a LCD screen and keyboard with Windoze, Office and IE. processor, RAM etc is optional since windoze is going to crash after a few days anyway :).

Indians think laptop is a very “executive” machine and is less valuable to a student or an average user. do Indians care for portability?
