After marketing books via bloggers, it is the turn of the movies. Serenity, a movie has launched a massive blog campaign and is handing out free movie tickets to bloggers to get them to write about the movie – good or bad. I must admit the brilliance of their plan although giving out a $7 movie ticket is nothing as compared to handing out $15-25 books. Unless the movie is really bad, bloggers will tend to write something about the movie, even if it isn’t glowing praise. Glenn Reynolds, Josh Marshall, Daniel Drezner, and Mathew Yglesias among others were one of the few bloggers invited for a screening. The combined readership of their blogs is close to half a million. Whoa! That’s some great publicity at the mere cost of $20-25, and of course even if they do criticize the movie, no publicity is bad publicity, right?
Now the question is, will Yash Raj Films or Dharma Productions give me free passes? Personally, I would prefer the favor from RGV’s Factory.

While viral marketing is being used, some blogger (me, for instance) are blogging on their own. Word of mouth has become so effective that most marketing firms will have to find better ways to justify their existence.
