If I am not mistaken, I remember a fleeting buzz of the Nobel Peace Prize with regards to the subcontinent. I haven’t heard much after that so I do not know how much importance is due.
But if the Swedish blokes are considering the incompatible Vajpayee-Musharraf for the honor, I will officially lose faith in the Nobel’s sanctity. Increasingly the Peace Prize has been politicized for achieving national gain. There have been plenty of notable recipients though and I do not belittle their mighty achievements. Awarding leaders of perennial warring nations for taking token measures to make peace is pandering to false hopes. The ignominy of the Arafat-Peres-Rabin award is still fresh. Moments after they received the award, fresh violence broke out and all hopes of a fresh start were dashed.
I personally believe that a quick truce between India and Pakistan is presumptuous and to expect lasting peace is next to impossible. Maybe the grand dream can be achieved with ‘baby steps’ that Vajpayee is now attempting but these efforts certainly are not Nobel-worthy. If despotic rouges like Arafat and Musharraf are considered for the top honor, I demand my Nobel. After all I did resolve differences between two screaming brats in my neighborhood.
