An earthquake of magnitude 8.2-8.7 has hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra Monday close to where a similar quake triggered a tsunami that left nearly 300,000 people dead or missing, the U.S. Geological Survey said. A USGS spokeswoman told Reuters the quake struck 125 miles west northwest off Sibolga, Sumatra or 880 miles northwest of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, close to where the 9.0 magnitude quake struck in December.   A spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey told CNN that the earthquake could cause tsunamis. A tsunami warning is in effect along the coast of the Indian Ocean - on and off but lets not risk it; stay away from the beach or ask others to. Let us hope the tsunami doesn’t strike this time around. The SEA-EAT blog should be the best place for future updates.

UPDATE: The tsunami alerts have been withdrawn in India, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. More updates at SEA-EAT.
