So now a Korean loses his head in the Iraq imbroglio and nope, that doesn’t mean he is just pissed off at the war. But then again, what is new in a series of mindless beheadings, which if left unchecked might be serious competition to the French Revolution. Daniel Pearl (although technically he wasn’t in Iraq, but the mess that Pakistan too is who knows the difference anyways), Nick Berg and Paul Johnson all literally sacrificed a la Halaal style to teach the stuffy Americans a lesson. How many heads will roll until the futility of the exercise will dawn upon the closeted jihadis?
Americans haven’t been totally pious either. The entire Abu Gharib incident was just one of the horrific side effects of a violence infested climate. Although I would never condone the humiliating acts, I wouldn’t be totally surprised either. Violence especially the organized kind that is popularly known as war has always brought out the worst in mankind (which semantically is a cruel irony). Right from the marauding armies of Timur Lane, Genghis Khan or Mughals to the systematic attempted elimination of Jews by Nazis, war often has provided the much-needed excuse to redefine ethnic cleansing. Not even the most pious civilization has risen above the mindless genocide. Kalinga is as fresh in the memory as the “accidental” killings in South Vietnam.
Thankfully, mankind has always survived attempts to wipe itself out and cultural groups, although diminished managed to bounce back. Armenians could withstand killings by the Turks and so will any people that harden itself in the brutal struggle for life. When does all end? Maybe never. War merely gives humans the excuse to exercise their basic animal instinct and indulge in sadistic activities. But I despise the kind of cowards that target innocent civilians and hapless strangers in their land as an excuse to tout their ideals. The religion, the sect or culture that allows such inhuman activities or fails to protest against barbaric actions by their people does deserve condemnation. Islamic nations are simply not protesting enough. Does that mean they concur? (via Shanti)
