I hope our local desi store gets this movie or at least the movie theater in Houston decides to show this movie instead of the regular trashy Bollywood fare (with exceptions, of course) we are dished out. Parzania is a heart-wrenching story of the Mody family and their son Azhar who was lost during the Gujarat riots of 2002.
Like it or not and regardless of the blame game that still goes on in India, the Gujarat riots was an unfortunate and deplorable incident in our nation’s history. Unfortunately, the rule of the mob and threat of violence against any dissenting voice still reigns in the state. Parzania will not be screened in Gujarat thanks to threats of local hoodlum, Babu Bajrangi who claims to be the ‘caretaker of Hindu sentiments’ [via]. I don’t think Hinduism which withstood thousands of years of tyranny of Muslim rule needs any protection from people like Bajrangi who threaten the peace of an already scarred city just because of a movie. In the end, it is Gujarat’s loss that they will not see a movie that is appreciated all over. I hope moderates in Gujarat will move on and not be held hostage to extremist views, be it any religion.
