America’s Got Talent just started its new season and although I have never been a regular watcher, I’ve loved the quirky acts and performances like the Quick Change Artistes and the Gymnast Archer. I was disappointed that they finally gave the million bucks to a singing girl. She could have easily waited and gone to American Idol. Don’t we already have a lot of singing ‘talent’ paraded on television already? Watching America’s Got Talent for genuine singing talent might be like watching Jerry Springer for couples counseling (I know, you’re waiting for them to go at each other). But as American Idol clearly panders to the popular music and other genres of singing or music virtually have no hope, such aspirants head to America’s Got Talent.

Now you may know that UK has its own version, Britain’s Got Talent. They recently had a contestant who chose to perform opera as his talent. A shy ordinary looking guy came out and wowed everyone. I don’t claim to know or understand opera but his performance definitely gave me goosebumps. It is an edited 4-minute version of a typical reality-performance audition but truly uplifting. Watch it:

Update#1: Incidentally, the guy Paul Potts reached the final with another amazing performance. He also got the most public votes following this performance. I’m rooting for him now. Video after the jump:

Update#2: Paul Potts wins the final and thus a chance to perform at the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Queen. Here is his final performance:
