Problems with FireFox

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or email alerts. Thanks for visiting!

FireFox seems to have taken a dislike to my computers. The otherwise cool browser hasn’t been giving me optimal performance and recent features on the web haven’t yet percolated down to me. The GMail notifier, for example has been the bane of my email life for the past several weeks. I have four GMail ids (I bet some of you have more). Two email ids work fine for the notifier; for the other two the default number of new emails is 3 and 1 respectively. I don’t know if this is Google’s cruel joke, giving me hope that someone has written to me when in fact no one has. Imagine my frustration when I see 3 new emails in my Notifier and none in my inbox when I click it.

If that wasn’t enough to screw up my email experience, FireFox crashes sporadically when I click on the Notifier. This happens more often when my laptop is not plugged in. All my open tabs with blogs ready to be linked on DesiPundit gone when I get home and try to check my email. I tried uninstalling the Notifier, reinstalling FireFox but nothing seems to change its odd behavior. The latest odd behavior has been with Google Reader. Simply put, I haven’t been able to use it. I exported my Bloglines OPML file to the Reader and it just hangs with the awful loading button (see image). I even created a separate GMail id for listing my only-desi RSS feeds because I thought my entire list would be too much; but in vain. This bug is irrespective of the computer I am using. Damn! I want to use Google Reader like everyone else. I even *gasp* tried using IE and it seems to work there. Now I am in a moral dilemma. Should I use IE for reading blogs? But then all my DesiPundit linking stuff is on FireFox and I love its tabs.

If I thought life at work was good, FireFox displayed a blank page. The menu bar was visible but the tab bar wasn’t. Clicking anywhere on the menubar yielded no result. I tried the uninstall-reinstall thing again but it wouldn’t budge. I was this close from flinging my keyboard through the monitor. This hasn’t changed one bit.

Bright ideas or better still, solutions, anyone?

Use Session Saver extension to save your open tabs when you accidentally quit Firefox or Firefox crashes. I can’t live without it now.

4 Gmail IDs? How do you live man! Do you actually use the space? I normally use just the single GMail account with lots of filters to assign labels for various things - work, blog commments, etc. automatically as the messages come in. Anyway I think the best solution might be to read your e-mail off the RSS feed of your respective GMail Inboxes.

As for bloglines/Sage/google reader and the rest of browser based aggregators - I’ve found none work very well. I found the same problem trying to import OPML into Google Reader. They all cause slowdowns or erratic behavior. Nothing like an external program to aggregate feeds - I use NetNewsWire for my Mac but there are plenty of great ones for Windows or Linux as well.

Google’s RSS reader is still very experimental. It hung for me too. Try Opera. It’s fast and free now.

  3. Selva Says:

oh.. while at it, I noticed that your blog page waits for a while to fetch stuff from truthlaidbear.com increasing the time for page-load significantly. Maybe it’s just a temporary thing.

    Trixy, what’s up with desipundit?

And 4 gmail-ids?!! I find it hard to maintain 2 email ids in all! My work one and the play one!

  5. Ash Says:

P, Anshul’s idea of RSS fields for your e-mails … That’s exactly the kind of thing I was suggesting the other day, na ?
    What can I say, I’m a genius ! :D

  6. Patrix Says:

Anshul, thanks for the lengthy explanation. The reason for my multiple gmail is because I use a pseudonym on my blog that I can’t use for my other personal and school communication. I have used the Screen Saver extension but uninstalled it; guess its time to get it back.

Selva, It is a relief to hear that someone else has a problem with the Reader. Heck, Om Malik too had trouble setting it up. It doesn’t show me all my new feeds at one glance, or does it? I don’t like that. I haven’t explored it much though.

Gabby, DesiPundit is back! Check it out. And thatz just 4 GMail ids…I didn’t mention my school, work, 2 Yahoo, 2 Hotmail, and 1 Rediff email ids. But of course, someone them are reserved for spam and random registering thingies

Ash, sigh! what can I say…says a lot about my choice, right? :)

  7. Rash Says:

tell me how u manage 4 gmail ids? I usually forget the check everything except the main one

  8. Patrix Says:

Rash, Don’t ask! I have honed it into an art. I wish I had something where I could merge all into one place. I bet there is something like that.

  9. Vulturo Says:

Fx 1.5b2 is a memory hog, stick to 1.0.7. till the proper release comes out. In any case, I always thought that the Gmail notifier extension for firefox sucked - barely used it for a few days. The problem here is not with Firefox, but with the extension.

Uninstalling/reinstalling isn’t helping you because you are using the same profile. Save all the stored passwords you need. Uninstall firefox, DELETE profile and reinstall firefox, and reinstall only the necessary extensions.

  10. Gabby Says:

Please use Outlook or something like that. Use “pop” and merge all your different inboxes to that. Please. Then you might actually have time to write as you sometimes do and ploys like “linking park” can be shelved. :) (2nd dig at LP and counting…Hee Hee)

  11. arZan Says:

Outlook or outlook express….should do really well to aggregate all the emails into one place.

Set rules so diff accounts remain in diff mailboxes.

If you use lunarpages as a host, then u can create an IMAP email there and get them all pooled into that. Once that is set up u can work from outlook or over the internet anywhere and your mailbox is always updated real time.

Works for me perfectly and I too have about 8 different IDs….including work, business, personal, and spamcollector

  12. Twilight Fairy Says:

aah..multiple mail id checking is an art..ask me ..
3 gmail (which are my own),
+ 3 gmail just for space (though I figured it was a bad idea as u need a good net connection to do that)
+ 1 gmail for my alumni involvement,
    2 rediffmail,
3 indiatimes (it sucks now but was good and spacious in some zamana),
one hotmail (sabse pehla mail acct, sabeer bhatia ke zamane ka),
1-2 yahoo (dont remember now kitne hain, upar se parents ke liye jo banaye thhe, woh bhee mein hee check kar kar ke batatee hoon :-|),
    1 lycos,
    1 excite.com,
    1 coolgoose.com,
1 spymac.com (this was 1gb even before gmail got generous) ,
work ka to alag hai hee.. and then there are so many that I have absolutely forgotten abt..and so many sites that ditched me and shutshop taking my mail with them :)

but practically it’s better to keep only 1 mail id in one domain at least.. :p :)

abt ur prob, firefox is too heavily loaded for me (I may be the only one who doesnt really like it).. isnt it supposed to *automagically* save the pages visited when it crashes? That’s like basic! If all you want is a tabbed interface which retains URL’s when the browser crashes, then there are several browser interfaces which run over IE.. I have used several - avant browser, MyIE etc.. they have the XP look and feel..and are simple and light weight.. Search for Avantbrowser or MyIE and use them.. life simplifies..

  13. Patrix Says:

Vulturo, Hmmm…I thought I was doing something wrong. This explains the difference bw a true geek and wannabe geek.

Gabby, hmmmm…this dig at LP almost inspired me to convert this blog into entirely LP-style…they say, it attracts more hits. Let other write, you just link to it and get famous. Ask Instapundit (although he does write quite a bit)

Arzan, I might have to take your help to merge all my accounts like that. I tried fiddling around in Thunderbird but guess ran out of patience.

Fairy, ah-ha! another email hogger!! Everyone suggests a new browser, Opera, MyIE…I just might have more browsers than websites I visit.

    >>I wish I had something where I could merge all into one >>place. I bet there is something like that.

    1) Try auto forwarding 3 ids mail to one place. Though this poses problem while replying :(
    2) Pop the mails using Outlook/thunderbird. Thunderbird ,again, configures only one account for sending the mails.

I skipped other comments, sorry, if they had already told the same.

  15. USC Trojan Says:

I am able to manage multiple gmail accounts fine manually. I just keep logging out and logging in periodically - that way I can at least focus on my job rather than keep responding to writing new emails!

Anyway, I am curious to know which notifier you are using that lets you check multiple gmail addresses? I thought the Google notifier only let you check one gmail address at any time, no?

And you must have seen by now that Gmail allows you to change the sender of the email from your gmail account, which may help you if you want to consolidate all your mails in one place. Consolidating will resolve one problem (checking multiple gmail addresses) but create another (collecting all garbage in one place).

I am currently forwarding two of my work addresses to one gmail account and have set up a label for each one so I can see emails for one account vs the other. Helps me a lot, but I don’t know the volume of your emails, so I am not sure if that helps you much or not.

  16. Kapil Says:

Frustrations all around, I guess. I had a terrible time working with Rojo earlier this week and I lost all my feeds.
