Well, you might think he cannot sing those high notes and merely whispers his Stevie Wonder rendition and guess what, you might be right. But America prefers a brown desi kid to a Pearl Jam rendition by one of the better singers, Sundance Head in American Idol. This is the first time a desi has made it to the top 12 of American Idol and although he might not emerge as the ultimate winner, his performance so far is commendable.
When it finally came down to Sanjaya and Sundance in the last two contestants where one would go home and the other would join the rest 11, I was fully confident that Sanjaya was going home (and I would no longer blog about American Idol.) But perhaps America wants me to continue.
This year’s contest doesn’t have the range of talent and I already know who the top two will be; if there is justice in the world, that is. And I am sure you know whom I am talking about. My prediction for Sanjaya - he will go only as far as top 8. Uske baad khudah jaane.

America does want you to continue Trixy. America wants me to go shopping and max out my credit cards too :)

Gabby, yup! Except my advisor seems to disagree :) And doing what America wants you to do is good for the economy and the freedom in the world, right? How can Bush be wrong about this?

I can’t understand you guys! Are you a musician? Can you sing? What do you understand about music? Can’t you hear? You can say Sanjaya hasn’t got a good presence and he is a little bit strange, but that kid can really sing. His performances is always in tune, no pithless and so on… Give him a break and try to study music!

I saw a lot of potential in Sanjaya. But honestly, the kid can sing but he is not American Idol material. They need someone who can sing, dance and have a pop starish stage presence. Sanjaya has not shown any of the latter two …. yet.

Somehow, I find his singing revolting. Definitely not the idol kind. I too felt that the Pearl Jam guy (who sang Jeremy) was decent and deserved a longer run.
Anyway, I found Shyamali better than Sanjaya.

This guy wants to ban American Idol because of Sanjaya making it to the next round. He also plans to “rig” the vote next week using VoIP.
American Idol Banned!
As far as Sundance, I think because he’s a rocker that hurt him. He’s 10X better than Sanjaya. Perhaps rock just isn’t American voters’ genre. I suppose that could explain why Chris Daughtry also got the boot last year. American Idol is all about “pop music” and “country”.

Gione, apun public hai…kuch bhi bol sakta hai. Musicians would starve if everyone was expected to be a musician to appreciate music. I agree that Sanjaya sings well and I like his genre but unfortunately he isn’t your popular pop star.
Santosh, thankfully you get it :)
Piker, well, I guess everyone find Shyamali better than Sanjaya ;) Anyway, the closest a rocker came to becoming an American Idol was when Bo Bice reached the final 2. I still think he was the best Idol of all. Unfortunately rock isn’t popular among those who watch and vote for Idol.
John, your ire against Sanjaya is misdirected. It just happens that he was pitted against Sundance by American Idol. For all you know other guys may have received lesser votes than he did. American Idol never tells you the actual ranking, do they? Think about it. And please take AI less seriously. It is a frikkin reality show.

Fox local news was really riled up yesterday because Sundance was voted out. Even they blamed Sanjaya for Sundance’s exit, which doesn’t make any sense. I am really interested in who you think are going to be in the top two, and I wonder if the top two has any guys. Personally, I think Sabrina was more shocking to have left rather than Sundance. And Sanjaya seems to be garnering votes from all the American desis…

Based on purely last week’s performance Sundance deserved to go - his rendition of Jeremy was horrific to say the least.
I dont like way judges are targeting Sanjaya though - if they didnt think he’s not the Idol material, why was even selected through auditions, group auditions, etc to land in top 24. He’s bad, but the blame squarely goes to the nincompoop judges who couldnt find anyone better than him amongst the hundred thousand odd people who auditioned for AI.
The poor kid is completely overwhelmed i think.

Sampada, Fox News probably has reason to be riled up but imagine our shock and anger when Bush was reelected. Democracy has its pitfalls :) And I hope the Bush election is more important. And yup! I was shocked at Sabrina’s ouster too.
Suyog, I agree. Sundance going for the rock song which I believe wouldn’t impress rock fans much less average listeners of American Idol who only understand pop. Wrong time to take a risk with song choice. Sanjaya is definitely overwhelmed. He is a baccha and plus doesn’t have a strong voice. He is more of a Norah Jones type singer.

Gosh, that kid stinks. Staying on pitch is not enough to be a good singer. His performances have as much life as my doorknob. When I saw him singing “stepping out with my baby”, I was going, “when is this going to pick up?” and it never did. He deserves to go home.
And Patrix, he’s not even “desi”. He’s half Indian, half white. Did you not see his white grandpa in the dedication?
As for the women, Disney Haley getting ahead of Sabrina Sloan? What was Amreeka thinking? She will be the first to get voted off. Sloan’s mistake was to sing a group song as a solo and then let the background vocals do half the work.
My favourite at the moment is Melinda Doolittle - a consummate performer. I can’t recall a single memorable singer from the guys.

Madman, you’re right. Sanjaya has failed to impress after the initial auditions. As I said, he isn’t versatile so wouldn’t last the different theme rounds in the final 12.
But he might be considered desi. His dad is an Indian. Probably his kids won’t be desi.
And yup! I love Melinda Dolittle. She is a class apart from the rest. If there is justice, she should win it all.
