A country ‘rallies’ behind a Bollywood celebrity to hand her one of her career’s biggest paychecks and Jade Goody and Danielle Lloyd can virtually kiss their entertainment careers farewell.
After the announcement of her victory, she thanked the public for “a fantastic opportunity to make my country proud”. Gosh! India sounds like a banana republic. I didn’t watch Big Brother but I would love to know what exactly she did on the show to make India proud…offer the other cheek while the rest of the country threatened to tear apart the other?
On the other hand, it sparked off a nationwide [in UK] debate on racism and underlines the growing political prowess of Indians in UK. But as Sepia Mutiny asks, how long will the debate last and will it have any lasting impact? I don’t think it will. People will just treat it like any other reality show and move on until the next pseudo-scandal comes along.
Or was the entire racism furore much ado about nothing? As Confused pointed out, we can be a tad sensitive at times and heck, even overlook the blatant racism we practice back home in India [via DesiPundit].

How much has she won?
And as you said, make India proud? Gosh!

Confused, honestly I am not sure. But if she was paid, £300,000 for her appearance then I am assuming the prize money was much more and in addition to that. Times 86 for a rupee conversion. And she gets to say she ‘made her country proud’.

She saying “making India proud” should have as much importance as the racial row on big brother.

Pat,
Just checked-it’s around 9 million INR. Not much considering Rahul Roy got like 50 lakhs for willing Big Boss.
But of course, publicity has been priceless for her.

A banana republic. Yes, that’s a ROTFL material :).
I watched the much highlighted BBC’s snippet where Ms flopstar Shetty went ala Miss World expression upon being announced the winner, or something to that effect. And it was the right moment to turn off the tube.

Bloghopper, But I bet that won’t get played up in the media as much as her win. Saw it on the front pages of almost all national dailies. Damn! we sure are short of real news.
Confused, probably not much directly from the show but the publicity she received is priceless. For a change people forgot about Abhishek-Aishwarya.
Chetan, I bet she was practicing that expression for a long time.
