Snow at last

I hear some bells ringing in my dreams until I realize that the bells are for real and it instead is my annoying cell phone. Its 3:30am!! for crying out loud. Hardly any one calls me during the day (I am not complaining) so who would call me at this unearthly hour? I reach out and groggily answer the phone, expecting the worst. But instead, it is an overly excited MV, happily telling me that it is snowing outside. She was more excited, not to see the much-awaited snow but because the university would predictably shut down tomorrow.

I sure was surprised although Ken Cook, the usually unreliable meteorologist at the local news station had predicted snow tonight. But then again, the bugger has been predicting snow for the past couple of months at least once a week. No such luck, it simply gets freezing cold but no white powder to show for it. But tonight it was different as I rushed out in the balcony to be happily greeted with globs of snowflakes. Previously, much to the amusement of my northern friends, I proudly classified speckles of ten-minute flurries as snowfall. While those up north were digging their way out of couple of feet of snow, we were expecting some of it to come our way at least for fun sake.

Atlanta last got snow two years back and ever since, we have been praying for some but in vain. The best thing about a snowfall is the eerie silence that falls over the entire landscape as the world in sight is slowly shrouded in stark white. I woke up Smelly Cat since he had never seen falling snow in his life. After giving me a disgusted look for disturbing his sleep, the realization of my words dawned on him as he immediately rushed out. I had to direct the poor disoriented soul from mistaking the bathroom door with the balcony door. But finally he could feast his eyes on some real fresh snow as all doubts regarding snow hating him faded away. The poor guy made a trip all the way to Toronto this December only to be greeted with unusually warm sunshine and in his words, “saabudaana-type” snow on the ground.

The world outside was slowly being shrouded in white, mottled with the occasional green from the pine trees. After seeing the snow for a little while, I snuggled back into my bed.

In the morning, most of the snow had melted away although there was a tiny layer to show that it wasn’t a mere dream. The university predictably shut down citing inclement weather but in fact it was just “one-inch snow” (I know up north people must be laughing hard). But people, when it doesn’t snow at all for years, it gives an excuse for us lazy Southerners to enjoy a coffee and bhaaji in the warm confines of our homes. MV got her share of happiness and so did Smelly Cat, who promptly ventured out with his digital camera to capture the elusive white on film..err..chip. I am just glad to get my work done at home instead of trekking all the way to downtown in horrid cold rain that is falling right now.
