I don’t believe I am already sensing the arrival of spring, considering I wrote about snow just a week back. The weather is certainly looking up and promises to remain cheery. The trees are ablaze in white blossoms, unfortunately emanating a horrid smell. Does it signify that all things that look beautiful really aren’t beautiful from within? Nah! I am reading too much into simple things. The still-barren trees turn green with envy upon seeing the riot of color on their brethren. The trees stand tall above bushes of yellow and red flowers, swaying happily in tandem with the lush green grass. The fact that the flower bushes have been directly planted from a nursery doesn’t take away the beauty.
The windows open up and Venetian blinds are rolled up as the sounds of nature intermingle with the hustle-bustle of every household on the block. We can hear soft music in the distance or simply couple having their daily conversation or kids squealing for their evening snack. It gives you a warm fuzzy feeling to be allowed access to their lives otherwise closeted behind tightly shut double-paned glazing. For once, air-conditioning is given a break and we let cross-ventilation unleash its natural charm with gentle whiffs of breeze work their way though our homes. Anyone would definitely welcome the break from noisy compressors chugging in their backyards and let natural order of things prevail.
The unpleasant clutter of fall leaves is soon forgotten as new buds spring up and warm sunlight bathes the environs making the dull grey climes a thing of the past. Admittedly there is a spring in everyone’s step and the hemlines of pretty girls take an upward trip much to the glee of the male population as spring fashions stage a dramatic comeback. All the stores finally shun all the heavy clothing and bring forth the light fluffy stuff. All the cars in the driveway seem to be decked up for a grand marriage procession with the sprinkling of the buds except for the lack of a “Just Married” tag.
Although I have been spared so far, the allergies attack with full force as if to play the spoil sport and people are sniffing and wheezing all over the place. But then again no one really minds a few days of allergy symptoms as long as they can look forward to the summer. Summer, fortunately is a season to look forward to in the U.S. unlike India where the baked look is not considered a hip trend. For better or for worse, spring is here to stay.
