Stephen Hawking, the world renowned University of Cambridge physicist famous for his theories on black holes and best-selling books about the Universe, is headlining the Physics Festival. He will speak on The Origin of the Universe in Rudder Auditorium on the Texas A&M campus on Sunday April 15th at 2:30pm [source.] I freely admit that I have one of those countless bookshelves around the world upon which The Brief History of Time sits unread. Ash has read it long time back (and other science books.) Someday, I’ll start and finish it and tick it off from the things-to-do list before I die. For die-hard physicists, Rocky Kolb of the University of Chicago will also be speaking on Saturday, April 14th at 6pm in Room 102 Zachary.
The other lecture is in a totally different arena. Rudy Giuliani, former NYC mayor will be speaking on campus in his ongoing campaign to seek the 2008 Republican presidential nomination [source.] Although I don’t agree with neither his policies nor his party on most issues, it would be interesting to at least go hear a political stump speech. He will be speaking at Texas A&M as part of the Wiley Lecture Series in Rudder Auditorium on April 20th. Giuliani is considered by many as the leading candidate amongst Republicans thanks to his role post-9/11 but he holds many opinions on gun control, abortion, and gay marriage that run counter to his part line. He also has been married thrice which might affect his standing in the party of ‘family value’ (bah!)
Bloggers or any interested readers who are in the vicinity of College Station might want to book tickets in advance at the MSC Box Office. The Giuliani lecture is free but still needs a ticket and the Hawking lecture is $5 for adults and $3 for students. We could only get balcony seats so I advice you to book them ASAP. You can do it online and pick them up later but this option hits you with a ton of service charges disproportionate to the actual prices.

Talking of lectures, last week Jorge Cham had come to campus. Don’t know if you attended it. A friend of mine went there though he told me he wasn’t as fun as his comics.

April seems to be the month of big names.. Al Gore’s coming to my Univ.

Piker, yeah I knew Cham was coming but only on the day he was supposed to…for Student Research Week, I think. I guess his brand of humor doesn’t translate well to real life :)
Sqrl, wow! that’s cool. I don’t think Gore would even make it here considering the Petroleum Engineering Dept.is on the top here :)

We had McCain and Obama in Tallahassee over the last weekend. I really like the field of presidential candidates in ‘08.

Santosh, I wish we have Obama come visit us but the closest he came was Houston. We might get the ‘red’ candidates although after primaries, everyone is likely to forget Texas and focus only on the swing states.
