Still Settling In

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or email alerts. Thanks for visiting!

I know I have been away the longest from my blog in recent times but I haven’t quit. I just have been busy settling in and establishing my home base in College Station. Thankfully, since the town isn’t too big, I have found my way around quite easily and have located the regular places that I would be frequenting. Ash is also in College Station now after doing her preliminary settling-in at Houston. We finally unpacked all my books, clothes, and other knick-knacks. It is amazing how two bags that you arrive in America can balloon to almost a truckload full of stuff. After buying a desk and a chair from some students, and couple of bookshelves, TV stand, and a shoe rack, my humble abode all of approximately 11’x11’ looks quite homely and cozy. We even managed to put up my posters and other pictures to lend the room a nice personal touch. Although packing and moving is a pain, rearranging your stuff in a new place has a different charm. I still have other things to take care of so until I am truly settled in, you can only expect personal posts. I will get back to ‘serious’ blogging only when I run out of stuff to narrate.

I almost missed another interesting aspect of my new apartment. I am
rooming with HyB, a senior. He is a serious rocker and our living area
downstairs (we have a duplex) is equipped with four electric guitars,
one acoustic guitar, a complete drum set, amplifiers, recording
equipment, and a home theater to boot. Now, if you are wondering how
the heck am I going to study with a full-scale pandemonium downstairs,
HyB has assured me that I can slam a curfew anytime things get out of
hand. The gentle non-confrontational individual that I am, I might just
stay back at college on party nights. The array of liquor bottles on
the entertainment center is testimony to the many parties that the
apartment might have witnessed. The carpet stains tell a story too
although HyB has been busy lately with the spot cleaner. But overall, I
am not too perturbed. He seems to be a cool guy and quite accommodating like me. Unless things get too serious, I don’t forsee any
serious problems. Heck, what’s life without new experiences, right? For
others, an undergrad and a doctoral student make for odd roommates.

I had always seen few visits to my blog from College Station and had
wondered if there might be any bloggers that read my blog too. As luck
would have it, Semantic Overload contacted me almost immediately and we
met up at Starbucks (where else?). He finds College Station boring and
often travels out for fun. I will reserve that luxury for a later time
especially after the serious dent in my pocket post-relocation. It was
nice talking to him and getting a feel of the town from a homegrown
Desi point of view.  We also share similar interests like photography and hiking. I hope to keep in touch and hang out more often
if academics permit. On other fronts, College Station is a really
inexpensive place especially after living in a big city. Almost
everything is half-priced here (except the gas, dammit!). I guess lack
of places to spend your money makes up for it although Houston is less
than an hour and half away. Considering that Ash will be based in
Houston, I have more than one reason to make that trip.

4 days away from your blog and you need to explain that you “haven’t quit”!! Dunno what you would have to do if you blogged with my frequency :p :)

Good to know that you’ve settled in at your new place, although the description about your new roomie gives a cause for concern… but then it might even turn out to be fun :)
    Enjoy!
