Terrorists spreading terror

News has trickled in that
Jama Masjid was hit by two blasts late last evening. The blasts occured just before the evening prayers began. Thankfully, no one was killed although thirteen people were injured. Now, this is certainly a strange target for terrorists because an Islamic place of worship has never been targetted in India (unless of course, you consider the Babri Masjid demolition an act of terrorism). Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the shahi imam of Jama Masjid who recently has been using “strong language against the militants” is convinced that these blasts are the handiwork of the terrorists responsible for the Banaras blasts.
If true, it would prove the non-religious nature of their intent and support only the spread of terror and create instability in India as their sole motive. Or in a typical conspiracy theory style, have Hindu fundamentalists done this to avenge the Banaras blasts? But that has never happened before. They aren’t an organized bunch and would rather resort to mob violence and rath yatras than doing something so devious. If the Shahi Imam is right, then it just might turn the tide against the terrorists who often resort to religious dictum as justification for their action causing some Muslims to even sympathize with them. But now what reason would they offer to killing ‘their own people’? Does this event change the way terrorists are perceived in India - as mere terror mongers and not religious zealots? I hope the media gets a clue and plays it up this way.

Thats a tad simplimistic.
I have no doubt its the Islamic terrorists who have done it, but they have never shied away from shedding the blood of their own brethen. Look at Kashmir, God knows enough Muslims have been killed there. Has that affected their support base?
They are Islamic only in the way they profess their loyalty to Islam-other wise they are terrorists and nothing more.

Confused, probably simplistic but not not improbable. Militants in Kashmir have killed Muslims no doubt but it can be explained away (by them) as collateral damage or just killing the ‘traitors’. But the attack on Jama Masjid is different as it is highly regarded among the Muslims in India. Any attack on the sacred mosque might be construed as an attack on Islam itself. So as I argue, this event may in fact make it clear that the terrorists are in fact that.

I was reading this news and it mentioned the crowd outside the mosque started shouting anti India slogans….and my fears came true …..this is exactly what this blast was meant for.
In India despite of our rich diversity ,size and population there have been a very few incidents where our tolerance for each other collapsed.
Lately, India has been seen as a major power with lot of intellect/human capital and country of youths more determined to succed than ever.Incidents like above are shameful attempt to push India back into days where prosperity & progress were much maligned words.

Utopian, I am surprised that in spite of knowing the identity (or at least having an idea) of the perpetrators, why would the people chant anti-India slogans? I guess, as you mention the fight pits a side changing (for the better) against a side that refuses any change and then is mighty jealous.

In a somewhat related incident, wasn’t there a similar bomb attack on a mosque somewhere in pakistan as well recently?

Khotta, yup there was. Except it might be explained away as Shia-Sunni sectarian violence but in India, it will be perceived as an attack on Muslims.

[...] Another bomb blast in Delhi, this time the target was Jama Masjid of all places. Luckily, no one is dead. Patrix thinks that will make the supporters of terrorists realize that they have no sympathy for Muslims. I have no such illusions hopes. From Kashmir to Iraq, Islamic terrorists have killed more Muslims than members of anyone other faith. What effect has that had? I guess all is Kosher as long as it is in the name of Jihad. [...]
