Thanksgiving Football

The other American tradition is watching the football game on the long weekend when many bitter rivalries take the field. On Friday, the bitter rivalry between Texas A&M and UT played out once again on the football field. The rivalry has been lopsided in recent times, with TAMU having lost the previous six contests while UT went on to win the National Championship last year. But as they say, you are as good as your last win.

The Aggies shocked the Longhorns and ended up with a 9-3 winning season, surprising same as that of their rivals who were beaten earlier by Kansas State and Ohio State. If nothing else, this win might have saved TAMU coach Franchoine’s job after two consecutive 1-point losses to Nebraska and Oklahoma. Nope, like an ass I failed to catch the action on TV and am still kicking myself especially since Ash always rubs in UT’s superior skills on the football field in my face. It was sweet revenge nevertheless.

But I did watch the ‘other’ game of the year i.e. USC vs. Notre Dame. Ranked 3rd and 4th respectively, this game had national championship hopes for the winner. And although USC was expected to win comfortably, Notre Dame led by Brady Quinn gave a scare or two especially in the second quarter. But it was a cracker of a game with its share of nervous moments.

For the record, I cheered for USC. Always have. Don’t ask me why. Even I don’t know. When I find myself watching teams or individuals toward whom I have little interest vested regards who wins, I watch the game for a while and find myself gradually cheering more for one team than the other. From then on, I support that team for the rest of the game. It is a subtle and inherent decision that I haven’t been able to explain. I remember cheering for Edberg similarly when he played against Becker when I knew little about tennis.

I have watched USC play earlier and love their attacking offense. Thankfully, they
made couple of touchdowns in the second half and coasted to an easy victory. If the BCS computers agree and they win their next game against UCLA, they might meet Ohio State in Arizona for the national championship. Now that would be one heck of a game.

Thanks to the Aggies, Huskers get to play the Sooners in the Big12 cahmpionship game. I was looking forward to a rematch with ‘horns. I think Huskers would have beaten them this time.

I was supporting USC, too. I don’t like Pete Caroll but, I hate the overrated Notre Dame more. IMO, they didn’t deserve the #6 ranking. Other than Michigan to whom they lost and almost lost against Michigan State, all they played and won against were high-school teams like Army, Navy, Air Force and Stanford. Wonder how long before their new coach (Fat Bastard) gets kicked out.

Did you notice how all the commentators are always sucking up to Notre Dame? Don’t know why they are so slavishly brown-nose. In the 4th quarter with less than 10 minutes left, it was 31-17 USC and one of them was saying, “the score is very deceiving, the Irish are behind by just two scores.”

Sorry to take space in your comment box. Should make a post myself.

    Brady Quinn Uses Drugs???

For those of you who were unfortunate to watch the game live between USC and Notre Dame, you missed out; those who happened to tape the game—you now have the luck of the Irish! Rerun you tape back to about 2:00 left in the third quarter to watch the camera showing Quinn sitting on the sidelines. At about the 1:53 mark, one of the Coaches or Trainers walks in front of him and passes something into Quinn’s hand, who then immediately pops it into his mouth and then take a swig from his drink. Given the fact that the team had actually played someone worth wild since the Michigan game, it was amusing to see the Quarterback exhausted and panting like a dog!
However, the question that comes to mind is—-what was passed to the assumed Heisman Trophy player? Whatever it was did not seem to work as well as was suppose to because a short time into the fourth quarter, the dog started panting again!

Parag, don’t worry about the long comment. I had kinda expected you on here after making that post. I haven’t forgotten your Green Bay winter game offer :)

Yup! You can thank us Aggies for paving the way for Huskers to the Big 12 Championshoip game. We’re content (for now) defeating t.u. Ditto on the Notre Dame hype. Frankly, I wasn’t too impressed by them and they have a very light schedule as compared to PAC-10 or SEC teams. Let’s hope that USC makes it to the national championship game. It’s anyone’s title after that although Troy Smith totally rocks this year.

YukYuk, now now…we may be getting carried away with the drugs allegations. He may not jeopardize his entire career over this game.
