I thought about an innovative experience the other day while watching Saving Private Ryan (again!) Movie theaters in Japan are offering a more complete movie experience – smells synchronized to certain scenes of a movie. I remember reading about this as a kid in the Russian magazine Misha and Techdirt also confirms that it is not a completely new idea.
Talk is that the Colin Farrell Oscar-winning-nominated movie, The New World will feature “a “floral scent” during a love scene, a mix of peppermint and rosemary during a sad scene and other aromatics.” Now getting back to what I was thinking, would it make your experience of a movie more real when you smell the stink of the burning flesh in the killing fields of Saving Private Ryan or is that just disgusting?

As long as they do not add smelly effects for the flatulence scences that have become the hallmark of so many Hollywood comedies of late. :-|
Not that I go to theatre to watch such films anyway………

I am not sure if the war movies and a few other reality oriented movies like the Constant Gardener or Hotel Rwanda will go for it. I am sure watching Black hawk down with the scent would give it a realistic touch but it’ll definitely not be an enjoyable experience.

Bongo, LOL! that should definitely keep the crowds away from slapstick comedy.
Havoc, I was kidding.

Ha!
Patrix you are caught!(good job Julien)
The New World was nominated only in Cinematography and did not win any oscars.
(Remember his own World Cup debacle and smacks his lips in satisfaction) :)

Julien, thanks for pointing that out. I goofed up. It was nominated though.
Confused, Nah! nothing can beat your cricket-football WC confusion. I would have loved to see your expression when you flew down to Germany in 2007 for the football WC. Anyway, this jhol proves my belief that bloggers can be good fact-checkers.
