The ill-effects of the Bush administration are finally surfacing especially in purely scientific fields. After the ridiculous comparison of the “Intelligent Design theory” with the scientifically-proven Theory of Evolution, his appointed religious heads in prominent positions in Washington are raising ridiculous objections to yet another scientific discovery. Certain social conservative groups are protesting against a new vaccine against cervical cancer arguing that administering it condones pre-marital sexual activity. I bet these people are still living in the Middle Ages. Celibacy against preventing sexually transmitted diseases is wishful thinking but unfortunately not true in real life.
Just for the background, cervical cancer strikes more than 100,000 U.S. women, killing almost 3,700. The vaccine developed is virtually 100 percent effective and acts best when administered before puberty. Since this can be a sexually transmitted disease, social conservatives fear that vaccinating children can encourage risky sexual behavior among teens”. I haven’t heard a more ridiculous argument before. So effectively, if they develop a vaccine for AIDS in the future, administering that vaccine would lead to rampant sexual behavior? Is the fear of contracting sexually transmitted diseases the only deterrent for teens who wish to have sex? Such regressive thinking is holding back human scientific progress. Already stem cell research has been significantly delayed and several lives are lost each year due to this research moratorium. And now the same groups are targeting children; exposing them to lethal diseases? I just want to tell the opponents, choice between death of your children and them having pre-marital (safe) sex is fairly common sense.

Truth Fairy, Happy Diwali to you too. Hope you come back with your “serious thoughts” :)
Ash, People have radical opinions but the sad fact is that they are in positions to dictate terms to the rest of us.
