One step short of a draft, Pentagon has removed the “limit on the time a citizen-soldier can be required to serve on active duty.” So if you volunteer once, you are in it for a long haul. You have to be lucky every time, the enemy has to be lucky just once. Thankfully, the two-term limit on the presidency remains.
The Pentagon also announced it is proposing to Congress that the size of the Army be increased by 65,000, to 547,000 and that the Marine Corps, the smallest of the services, grow by 27,000, to 202,000, over the next five years.
Of course, if you plan on implementing an unpopular ’surge’ in combat operations, you aren’t getting any new recruits but instead you have to ‘recycle’ the existing ones. If this continues, we might see one of the world’s largest standing army scattered all over the world on its way to establishing the United States as a imperialist power. Thankfully, once this presidency is done with and if the powers exchange hands, we could see a reversal of this policy but it is going to be two long years. I fail to understand how a nation forgets the lessons from its previous failed war especially so when the comparisons are undeniable.
Today, as I was returning home from work I saw something that I would never have expected in red-state Texas - war protesters. I guess, this is the beginning of the end.
