Daily Kos, the blog with the highest number of readers in the blogosphere has a piece on my favorite topic – lack of comments on blogs (I can almost hear a collective groan). Of course, I am not going to rile up the desi bloggers (again!) who don’t have comments because they have cited their reasons and I cannot convince them otherwise because it is, in fact their blog.
Kos cites Chris Bowers who takes the argument further by comparing liberal and conservative blogs regards provision of comments. It turns out that conservative bloggers who had enjoyed almost twice the traffic as compared to the liberal bloggers. However, now the liberal side has a 65% lead although the conservative side has larger number of blogs. The reason – new blogs have no avenue to be discovered by others. I remember the time when I got many readers through comment boxes of other blogs (personal confession - I wish I had time to offer constructive comments on more blogs than I do now). The truth remains, many new bloggers build social networks and attract readers by commenting extensively on other more popular blogs. Chris reinforces this fact by reporting on larger number of conservative blogs with falling readership:
“There are swarms of new conservative voices looking to breakout in the right-wing blogosphere, but they are not even allowed to comment, much less post a diary and gain a following, on the high traffic conservative blogs. Instead, without any fanfare, they are forced to start their own blogs. However, because of the top-down nature of right-wing blogs, new conservative blogs remain almost entirely dependent upon the untouchable high traffic blogs for visitors. In short, the anti-community nature of right-wing blogs has resulted in a stagnant aristocracy within the conservative blogosphere that prevents the emergence of new voices and, as a result, new reasons for people to visit conservative blogs.”
Of course, this post at Daily Kos already has 159 comments and counting…
